Laser Vision Correction
A flap is cut in the cornea (the clear, front surface of the eye). Then the flap is gently folded back. An excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea. This is similar to a contact lens, which temporarily forms a new shape on the cornea. However, the laser’s alterations are permanent. The flap is then put back in place, acting like a natural bandage.
The “wow” effect of LASIK is the very rapid postoperative recovery of vision and the decreased level of discomfort. You hear from people who say they did not feel anything and could see well the very first day. Most people have functional vision in 24 to 48 hours. This is true in some cases, but it must be noted that each person will heal at a different rate. Although vision is greatly improved immediately after the surgery, it continues to improve for some weeks and even months.
Everyone’s eyes are different. Even though you may have had a friend who has had LASIK, it’s not necessarily right for you. If you are interested in laser vision correction, Dr. Schomaker will be happy to help you choose the surgeon, procedure and laser appropriate for you. Dr. Schomaker works with the best refractive surgeons in West Michigan. He does the pre-surgical workup and post-surgery follow-up care.
